One of the famous products in the Kiso area. They make this cake as a tradition on the day of Tango No Sekku, the Boy’s Festival (celebrated on the 5th of June in the Kiso area, one month after other areas) that wishes for the growth of children.
Bean jam wrapped in a ball of rice powder paste, rolled and steamed in a leaf from the Japanese white-bark magnolia. It is designated as a selective intangible folk-cultural property of Nagano Prefecture as “Hobamaki of Kiso”.
The sweet is made from late May to early July, when the leaves of magnolia trees are soft. You can purchase it at Japanese sweets shops in the Kiso area, including Shiojiri City and Nakatsugawa City. The Hoba Festival is held in parts of the Kiso area, where you can enjoy “Hoba-sushi”.
